Chapter Nine

Arms crossed over his chest, Mike leaned over the far wall in the community center, watching as Sam, cutely dressed like a bee, jumped around the stage, her smile so bright it was blinding. She wasn’t that coordinated, but there was something about the way she jiggled around, wiggling her fake wings, her skinny arms flying all over the place out of tune with the music, that was just adorable. There was a palpable tension between her and the other girls, though, especially with Marcy, whom Sam, never losing her smile, had elbowed and made stumble back a couple of times already.

From where he was standing, he could see Kyra sitting in the first row, proudly watching her daughter, her face soft. His chest clenched. He would love to walk up there and kiss the living daylights out of her, but that wasn’t what Kyra wanted. In all honesty, he wasn’t sure he was ready to answer all the questions such a bold movement would raise either.

He wasn’t supposed to be participating in any public events with Kyra and her kid, but the whole town was present, so he figured he could be there too. And it wasn’t as if he was there sitting by her side, his arm around her shoulder, making a public statement. He was lurking in a corner, trying to steal a peek of his two favorite girls in the world. Pathetic, really.

As he was musing on his patheticness, his grandmother approached him from behind. “So here you are,” she whispered. “They’re awesome, aren’t they? They almost drove Wilma insane, but look at them now.”

Mike smiled. At that same moment Sam tripped over her feet but held on to her balance, only to be pushed by Marcy, who, apparently, wasn’t above holding a grudge or two either.

Wilma had brought the girls to the gym several times to practice after that first attempt when Sam had FUBARed the whole room, and Mike had been able to follow their dynamics. The girls danced, eyeing Sam warily, Marcy in the lead, all following Wilma’s instructions while Sam was like a wrecking ball around them, pretending she didn’t care that the others were leaving her aside but not really pulling it off. School would start soon, and Sam needed to learn to play with others, at least for however long she and Kyra were staying in Alden. The karate classes for kids would resume after the summer break, and he was going to get Sam to take part. It shouldn’t be difficult; whenever she was in the gym, which was almost every day, the kid followed him around all the time, and he was the karate teacher.

“Kyra is over there. There’s an empty seat by her side. Why don’t you go sit with her?”

“I’m fine here,” he grunted.

It had been two weeks since the day his grandmother and her partners in crime had locked them in the community center, and he’d kept his part of the deal. Grudgingly, but he had.
